As the director of library services for the City of Hayward, I served as client manager to design, develop, fund and build the $65 million 21st Century Library and Heritage Plaza project. The project included a 55,000 square foot public library facility and the complete restoration of Hayward’s historic central plaza.
Constructed of steel, concrete, glass and terracotta, the new library and adjacent parking garage are fitted with rooftop solar panels that offset 100% of the energy consumed by the new library as well as the parking garage.
Key elements of the library facility include:
- A physical collection of 200,000 books and media items
- Two homework tutoring centers for children and teens
- A sixteen seat technology training center
- Community learning center for partner agencies to conduct community workshops and demonstrations
- Makerspace for creating with computers, robotics, textiles, 3D printing, electronic art, and traditional arts and crafts
- Storefront coffee shop operated by a local vendor
- Friends of the Library office and gift shop
- Self-service library returns and automated library materials handling system
- Three major commissioned public art installations curated through a community review process.
The project also includes an innovative rainwater catchment and recycling system that saves and recycles 400,000 gallons of rainwater per year. The water is filtered and treated then used to flush toilets in the new library and irrigate landscaping in Heritage Plaza. In addition, a significant underground rainwater reservoir was installed beneath the restored Heritage Plaza to provide additional storage for recaptured rainwater.
